In the spring of 2025, Landschapsbeheer Drenthe created a large pond in our garden. The aim is to provide a suitable habitat for the garlic toad (Pelobates fuscus), a very rare species that lives nearby. In fact, the largest population of this toad in the Netherlands can be found just down the road, in the ice skating rink.
Across the region, Landschapsbeheer Drenthe is working hard to restore and develop habitats for this elusive amphibian. We’re happy to contribute by making part of our garden available for this purpose.
Soon, grass will start growing around the pond again, and the area will be nicely landscaped.
We hope that next year, there will be enough water in the pond to attract the garlic toad. It’s a special project—and the garden keeps getting more beautiful. For us all to enjoy.
